imagistic Employs Responsive Web Design for imagistic and Grantastic Sites

Imagistic has leveraged responsive web design principles in redeploying its existing corporate web site properties. Kevin Howard Goldberg, president and CTO of Imagistic explained that, “... when I first saw a presentation on responsive web design I immediately knew this was going to be an important movement in web design and development.” But knowing that ideas are only as good as their implementation, he decided to take the Imagistic corporate sites and re-architect them first.

Responsive web design is a methodology of using cascading style sheets (CSS) to adjust the content and layout of a web site based on the device that is viewing the site. In doing so, a single web page will essentially change the way it displays content, targeted to the device requesting the page.

In the past, web sites were designed and developed based on desktop / laptop browsers. If a user visited a web site on a mobile device, much of the site’s content was off-screen requiring them to slide around the screen, zoom in and out, or simply hunt and peck for content. Then, with the increase in mobile devices browsing the web, companies developed different web pages to streamline designs and layouts for mobile devices; site addresses were often prefixed with “mobile.” or just “m.”. The downside with this strategy was that companies needed to develop and maintain two or more separate sites whether through hard-coded HTML or CMSes. And with the increasing number and array of smart phones, netbooks, tablets, and other handheld devices browsing the web, having a mobile strategy became an imperative.

Imagistic developed a mobile version of its site in 2011. Then, in early 2012, Kevin became fascinated with the concept of responsive web design. After much research and planning, he decided to restructure both the corporate site (www.imagistic.com) as well as Imagistic’s non-profit arm (Grantastic). By employing media queries to support a responsive web design methodology, Imagistic has embraced a better way to ensure that designs are properly displayed (no matter how large (or small) the display).
